Fuel Assembly Information and Reporting System BABS

The database system BABS is responsible for the administration of nuclear fuel in nuclear power plants: in the core, the storage pool and the on-site intermediate storage facility. The same database can be accessed from all authorized locations and can be utilised for enquiries related to fuel supply and disposal management, for strategy enquiries, evaluations involving several plants and as a basis for commercial tasks.

The plant operator is responsible for the maintenance of the database for the core and storage inventory to allow the compilation of a current status report at any time. The fuel inventory is required, in particular, for periodic reports to EURATOM and for inspections by the government authorities. At headquarters, additional interplant enquiries are of interest such as reports, statistics, administration of purchase orders and the assessment for fuel assemblies with regard to further use or transport to the on-site intermediate storage facilities.

BABS manages the current data and histories of

  • fuel assemblies

  • fuel assembly channels and channel fasteners (only BWR)

  • control elements

  • flow restrictors (only PWR)

  • LPRM strings (only BWR)

  • other nuclear components (dummies, neutron sources)

  • fuel rod containers

  • transport and storage casks

Data for specific activities, in addition to the storage information, can be stored and accessed for these objects. Examples are: orders, deliveries, inspections, repairs, utilisation and transport, assessments and transport planning.

An  integrated user administration regulates the access rights for various objects and activities. Data synchronisation between the BABS databases for the various locations is achieved via intelligent replication.
